Greetings, Red Oak Rotarians!
Comparison is the thief of joy. Many years ago, my sister-in-law (who is a very wise woman) shared those words on her social media. They have stayed with me. They helped me when my kids were young, and I was a single mom comparing what other parents could give their kids for birthdays and vacations. They helped me when I bought a new-to-me car that wasn't as big or fancy as the cars other sports moms were driving. They helped me realize during my first year as Rotary president that I was not going to be a president like the ones I had seen before me.
But it took me a while to realize that. I was so anxious about being president. I wasn't Candy or Tim or Chris. They are energetic, informed and strong leaders each with a passion for Rotary. And I admire and respect everything they did - and still do - for Rotary. But I am not them. I brought my own ideas and passions and strengths to the role of president. And I'm proud of all I've done as our club president, none of which would have been possible without the support of the club.
We held club elections earlier this month. The approved ballot was missing a few key officers for the upcoming year, namely president and treasurer. This means we still need a president and a treasurer. There is no manuscript for how to be a club president. There is no manuscript for how to be a club treasurer. Whomever chooses to fill those roles should understand they are free to put their own mark on the club and take ownership of their role. They should also understand they will have the full support of the membership helping to make their tenure successful.
If you are even remotely interested in taking on a leadership role in our club, please let me know. Having all of our officer positions filled, and having our committees full with a chairperson each, will help us have a successful upcoming year.
Speaking of the upcoming year, I hope each and every one of you had a blessed Christmas and that you ring in the new year safely!
Respectfully,
Emily H. Martin
